We’re having a great Autumn so far but before we get on to that let’s round up the summer. We had a really good summer at the Trust. Our two week Summer Skills school for 7-13 year olds was full to capacity everyday, and according to the feedback, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
“I just wanted to write to thank you for all of the amazing experiences that you have given my 8 year old..thank you for providing such an amazing summer camp. Not only did you help my daughter to have an amazing time, but also enabled me to work and know that she was safe and happy.”
In addition, NXG Trust gave three grants to other local charities, each around £1000, to provide other summer activities for young people and families with young children. New Cross Learning, REMEC Youth and Somerville all benefited from NXG funding this summer.
With funding from the New Cross Assembly, NXG also delivered for a second year knife crime awareness workshops to 180 Year 5 and 6 pupils in three local primary schools.
And now Autumn has got a whole lot better with the Trust getting two new grants in, one for £8K to deliver more knife crime awareness workshops in local primary schools over two years (hopefully to be complemented by some funding from the New Cross local assembly to cover three further primary schools in New Cross) and £5K from Team London to fund our new Conversation Cafe which will be starting in January (subject to agreement). This is a new development where we bring together people who speak English as a second language with people who speak English well enough and who want to get out and meet new people and have a nice afternoon making conversation.
The Conversation Cafe will be at Besson Street Community Garden every Monday afternoon starting in January. There will be good teas and coffee, fresh fruit and lovely cakes. We are looking for volunteers to come along and help get the conversation going – anyone with a reasonable level of spoken English will be really helpful in supporting people who speak English as a second language to develop their conversation skills.
