Digital Skills Coach Volunteers: New Cross Gate Trust is a local community charity providing a wide range of services to local communities in and around the borough of Lewisham. We are looking for a volunteer to support us in delivering our Digital Life Skills programme to local residents. Join us in this new role as a Digital Skills Coach, working with local people to improve their confidence in using a computer, the internet and online services. You don’t need to be an IT expert; you just need to have a general awareness and confidence in using a computer and the Internet.
Role overview: As a Digital Skills Coach you’ll encourage and support learners develop their confidence in using a computer, the Internet and accessing a range of online services. This may involve supporting an older person to access online services; help a resident email their local council; talk to a parent or carer concerned about Internet safety. You will help produce and develop a variety of community learning resources. Volunteers will also help promote our service within the local community.
Time commitment: Ideally, we are looking for someone who can volunteer with us for 3 months or longer for at least 2 hours per week.
General duties: Each Digital Skills volunteer will contribute in their own way based upon their skills and confidence. Your general duties may include any of the following:
Explain and demonstrate how to use a laptop, mobile phone, tablet or iPad.
Help learners develop basic online skills (i.e. sending and receiving emails, browsing websites, filling in online forms etc).
Show learners how to use the Internet to find local services and social activities.
Explore online shopping and banking safety issues.
Support learners develop basic Microsoft Word skills.
Help develop community learning resources and educational materials.
Offer informal advice regarding staying safe online (i.e. privacy protection, scams).
Help promote our service within the wider community
Skills and qualities most suited to this role:
Able to use computers, the internet and email confidently.
Good communication and patient listening skills.
Excellent time-keeping and attendance are essential.
A patient, calm temperament and sensitivity to the needs of others.
Must be reliable and committed with a sense of responsibility.
Ability to follow instructions and use your initiative when required.
Enjoys working with people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
Recognise and work within personal and organisational boundaries.
An understanding of the need for learner confidentiality.
