Boost your child's life chances

There is no doubt about it: reading plays a powerful role in helping children thrive in life. The good news is that supporting your child’s journey into reading can start long before they recognise a single word on a page.

Reading starts before reading
Children don’t need to be able to read to benefit from books. They can be encouraged to “read” books long before they can actually read. Looking at pictures together, talking about what’s happening, and letting children babble, point, and make up their own ideas about the story all help to build vital pre-reading skills.
Learning how to hold a book, turn the pages, and treat books with care also matters. These small moments help children feel confident and comfortable with books - and that confidence stays with them as they grow.
Some parents know this better than anyone. There are parents who didn’t have the chance to learn to read themselves, but who understand just how important books can be. They say that looking at picture books and making up the story for their children was vital to getting their children into books, giving their kids an opportunity they never had.
A special moment together
What can be more intimate and cosy for the parent/carer and child relationship than sitting down with a good book and reading it together?
Whether it’s before bed, on the sofa after nursery or during a quiet moment in the day, shared reading strengthens the bond between parent or carer and child.
Don’t let barriers get in the way
Not much money or no room for loads of bookshelves in your flat?
A lack of space or money doesn’t have to be a barrier to reading. We are incredibly lucky to still have free public libraries, including those close to New Cross Gate, where families can borrow books at no cost.
Libraries are welcoming spaces for families, offering picture books, story times, and a calm place to explore together.
Every story counts
You don’t need to read perfectly. You don’t need expensive books. What matters is time, attention and encouragement. By sharing stories, you are giving your child a gift that lasts a lifetime.
